Many customers often face the problem of thread breakage or thread trimming when using embroidery machines. This phenomenon is abnormal. One of the most common reasons for this problem is that the customer uses a disposable bobbin. Today we are going to share in detail why there is this problem and how to choose and use the bobbin correctly.
We have found that many customers use disposable bobbins, which cause the thread trimming to be unstable, sometimes it can be cut, and sometimes it will not cut. Why a disposable bobbin can easily cause thread trimming problems and how to overcome it, we will explain later.
Before that, let’s firstly show you all the different kinds of bobbins on the market and how they differ. Customers often can buy a disposable bobbin on Amazon in a package like this, that’s just a disposable bobbin.
Disposable bobbins are divided into many types. Here, let’s show you the first kind.
This kind of bobbin has a medium intensity. The material of the thread is polyester. This bobbin has no core and no shell, its intensity is pretty weak and it is easily damaged. However, among the many bobbins, this one is the cheapest.
This kind of bobbin has a high intensity. The material of the thread is polyester and the bobbin has a core in the center. For this bobbin, 4 types are shown here.
This one is only with one central plastic core, no shell for wrapping. The color of the thread is white and the material is polyester. It’s a disposable bobbin.
Black one. This one is similar with the first one. It has same material (polyester), just only with different colors. You can see, a white plastic core is in the middle. Customers can often buy this bobbin on Amazon.
The Third one is also similar, just has a paper core in the center. It also has no shell for wrapping. This bobbin is also available on Amazon.
This kind of bobbin is fully wrapped and has a plastic shell on both sides of the thread. It’s slightly more expensive on Amazon. Its structure is very similar to an aluminum bobbin, except that the material is different, the shell is made of plastic. This is also a disposable bobbin.
The thread material of this bobbin is different from other bobbins, it is cotton. You can compare it, its color is not the same as the polyester thread, it is darker. Check the following picture, the darker one is made of cotton and the white one is made of polyester.
The L aluminum bobbin is the standard bobbin on embroidery machines, it has the highest structural strength and has the most stable embroidery effect, although it requires manual winding by a winding machine.
Just showed you these universal bobbins on the market, then what is the important difference between these bobbins? And how is it different from the standard L aluminum bobbin?
Next, we will take these bobbins for comparison. Actually compared with these different bobbins, we found that this aluminum bobbin is of the best embroidery effect, although it requires manual winding by a thread winding machine. Except for the aluminum bobbin and the fully wrapped plastic bobbin (the two adopt the same structure), all other bobbins adopt glue spraying process, which don’t have a solid structure outside to wrap the bobbin.
Among the whole bobbin series, the 75 D/2-M is with the cheapest price. As you can see, it does not have any bobbin shell and core, the structure is very fragile. So this bobbin has the worst embroidery performance while it’s with the lowest price. And the price is followed by 70 D/2-H with a paper core or a plastic core in the middle. Next, the more expensive disposable bobbin is this one: 70 D/2-H bobbin with a plastic core and a plastic shell on both sides of the thread, which is fully wrapped. And the last one, of course is the L aluminum bobbin with the highest price and highest strong structure.
We know that many customers is busy for their orders and don’t have much time to use a winding machine to wind their own bobbin, so they would choose to buy a disposable bobbin from Amazon to save their time and energy. It’s totally understandable.
If you really want to use a disposable bobbin to save your time, then we strongly recommend this one:70 D/2-H bobbin with a plastic core and a plastic shell on both sides of the thread, which is fully wrapped. Just as the following.
Because there are certain standards when using bobbins for different upper threads, different upper threads have different requirements for bobbins. So it's totally necessary to learn some about threads. Today we are going to show you four different kinds of threads here. The first one is made of 120D-2 polyester. The second one is made of 75D-2 polyester. The third one: 120D-3 polyester thread. And the last one is pure cotton thread.
Many customers choose to use Madeira’s cotton thread to achieve better embroidery quality. If you want to achieve a higher quality of embroidery works, then we recommend you to use this kind of cotton thread for the bottom thread.
Generally the diameter of the bottom thread should be 2/3 of the upper thread, this is the most standard bobbin thread choice. For this 3 kinds of threads: 120D-2, 120D-3 and 75D-2, the most difference is that their diameter is not the same. For example, these two: 75D-2 and 120D-2, Compared with 75D, the diameter of 120D will be thicker. Another example: 120D-2 and 120D-3. Compared with these two kinds of thread, -2 means two threads putting together, and -3 means three threads putting together, the 120D-3 is stronger than the 120D-2. For all the cotton thread, We generally should choose this type: 40-2S. Choose different bobbins according to different upper threads.
Generally we should choose different bobbins according to different upper threads. Today we give some of our suggestions. Because many customers choose to use disposable bobbins, we strongly recommend that you must choose this type of bobbin: 70 D/2-H bobbin with a plastic core and a plastic shell on both sides of the thread, which is fully wrapped. I also see that many customers choose to use magnetic bobbins, lots of people may be accustomed to using this bobbin. But when you embroider on a children’s T-shirt or a softer T-shirt for men or women, we still recommend you to choose this commonly used bobbin: L aluminum bobbin. Because in this way, you can choose a better bottom thread, so that the quality of the embroidery will be more stable and precise.
OK,now let’s go back to share why after you use these disposable bobbins, it would cause problem of thread breakage or thread trimming. There are two reasons, the most important one is the position of the thread picker. Generally, the embroidery machine is adjusted according to the standard aluminum bobbin when it leaves the factory. The default adjusted position of the thread picker is very close to the bobbin. When you use a disposable bobbin, the position of the thread picker need to be adjusted, you need to move the position of the picker a little bit out.
Look at this picture, this is a bobbin we used.
You can see clearly that this circle is the mark of being hit by the thread picker. If it is any kind of bobbin in the glue spraying process, the thread picker will hit the bobbin itself. Because it has no shell protection, so it will often cause the thread trimming to be unstable. So I suggest you choose the kind of disposable bobbin with plastic shell, which can not only help you save time, but also be able to avoid the problem of thread breakage or thread trimming.
Another important point, now all our bobbins are L bobbins, and this L represents the diameter of the bobbin. Many customers choose the M-type bobbin because of inexperience, and its diameter will be smaller. So sum up the above points and give you some suggestions. When you choose cotton thread, it is recommended that you buy cotton thread and then use the winding machine to wind it. If you choose polyester thread, you can buy this kind of bobbin: 70 D/2-H bobbin with a plastic core and a plastic shell on both sides of the thread, which is fully wrapped. Because these bobbins are all from China, whether you buy them on Amazon or elsewhere, they are actually relatively cheap in quality, basically polyester, and no cotton threads. That’s why we always recommend our customers to use L aluminum bobbin.
There is another detail. All experienced customers know that when we go to wind the bobbin, it will not be too full, usually 70%-80%. The following picture is a wrong demonstration, which is very full.
Often there are disposable bobbins with large diameters in market, when using this kind of bobbin, the problem of thread trimming often occurs, this should be avoided.
OK, after introducing all kinds of bobbins and explaining why improper use of disposable bobbins can cause thread trimming problems, let’s teach you how to adjust the position of the thread picker to fit the disposable bobbin. You can watch this video to learn the skills.
